During Thursday’s Troup County School Board meeting, the board voted to approve school resource officer (SRO) agreements with the City of LaGrange, Troup County, the City of West Point and the City of Hogansville.
With the approval, TCSS will have a total of 19 SROs. Moving forward, the LPD will provide 10 officers, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office will provide 7 and the Hogansville Police Department and West Point Police Department will provide one SRO each.
The costs of each SRO are prorated for the 191.25 days officers would be working in the schools and not handling work outside of the school system.
TCSS will pay $66,332.95 per SRO from the LPD, $58,418.06 per SRO from TCSO, $49,254.52 for a SRO from WPPD and $48,814.89 for a SRO from HPD.
Each entity provided TCSS with a breakdown of costs associated with SROs, including salary, health insurance, etc. and then prorated the number of school days.
“I think it makes good sense to take what they would earn as a full-time officer in those different systems. We get our fair share of that depending on how many days they work with us, rather than just deciding on payment that works across the board for all the entities involved. I think this is a good way to do it,” board member Cathy Hunt said.
