Starting on March 27, Communities in School Troup County will launch a program called Monday Motivation and Mentorship at LaGrange High School.

Tabitha Lewis-Coverson, executive director for CIS of Troup County, said the program is currently looking for potential mentors.

“On Mondays from 7:45 until 8:15 a.m., we’re looking for people to come and greet the students in the areas where the kids congregate before school starts. We will have people there if the kids want to talk, gain a potential mentor —whatever the students might need,” Coverson said. “It may morph into something more substantial where a student and one of the mentors connect, and then it’s an ongoing mentorship.”

Coverson said participators can choose which Mondays they’d like to come out and will need to submit a background check beforehand.

She said based off a survey done with students, one thing that all of them agreed on is that adults need to get more involved with youth.

Creating the program based off of their perspective, Coverson said she hopes to get a diverse group of mentors.

“We need people from all spectrums because some kids just need somebody to talk to, some students might connect with somebody on a professional level. We got juniors and seniors who might be looking for career opportunities and might have a conversation with someone that may spark their interest in a certain career,” Coverson said.

Coverson said the program needs people who are passionate about helping the youth and are compassionate because of some circumstances that students may be dealing with.

“We’re just looking for positive people to provide 30 minutes of positivity for the students before they start their day,” she said.

Coverson said she feels there are benefits for children and adults who participate in the program.

“For the students, this will be another layer of support and show them that there are people in the community who are concerned about them who care about them, who want to see them succeed,” Coverson said.

“We want the community to get involved in surround these kids with positivity and support. Hopefully, there’ll be some commonality between the students and the mentors. We don’t want this to be you know, just isolated to LaGrange High School. We love to see it spread to all the schools.”
