On March 26, Hair for a Cause’s ninth annual Hair and Fashion show will be held at the Callaway Conference Center. 

Created in 2012 by LaQuita Harmon, the show started as a way to give back to the community. 

“God gave me a vision to give back to the community,” Harmon said. “I started gathering up my friends and some family members and created a committee that ultimately helped put on our first hair show in 2012.” 

Renee Adams, the executive administrator, said hundreds of people typically attend the show.

“Due to Covid, the crowd has been smaller. Before then, we were averaging 300 plus people coming to the shows and the community coming together to support the recipients,” Adams said. “It’s just been such a blessing to see that hard work and community come together.”

Harmon said they will have over 100 models this year with over 30 sponsors. There will also be vendors and food trucks on site. 

The event aims to raise money for two to three people each year, all of whom are diagnosed with potentially terminal illnesses. This year the honorees/recipients are Delorian Norman, Kawana Burts and Dwight Kelley. 

Burts has lupus and travels to Carrollton to receive medication and injections for her condition. Norman was diagnosed September 2022 with synovial sarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue disease that has required chemotherapy and currently extensive radiation. Kelley, who is a double amputee, was diagnosed in 2012 with end-stage renal disease and is currently on dialysis three times a week.

Harmon said they hope to raise approximately $15,000 this year, giving the recipients $5,000 each. 

In nine years of putting on the show, Harmon said the best part has been watching the joy in the honoree’s faces. 

“It has been a blessing to see the smiles on all of my honorees’ faces,” Harmon said. “I feel like when you’re going through something you get behind on life, whether that’s work, bills or self-care. It is something inside of me that made me feel good knowing that I was able to help somebody, that my staff and I were able to help somebody. We don’t put this on to get paid. It takes a lot of preparation and seeing the result of it coming together makes it worth it every year.” 

Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. and the show will start at 4 p.m. Harmon said general admission tickets are still available or $25.
