LaGrange High School will host its annual Spring Concert this weekend starting on Thursday night. The theme for this year’s concert is “Reach for the Stars.”

The concert features LHS students from all grade levels and has become an annual tradition for the school for more than 30 years.

LHS Choral Director Brandi Turner said longtime music education instructor Marty Davis started the concert in 1990. Davis served as choral director for LaGrange High School for nearly two decades until her retirement in 2007.

Turner said she was in the concert back when she was in high school. She has since taken over for Davis, who passed away in 2020.

“I was her assistant, and that’s what led me to take on the role,” Turner said. “I learned everything from her. She’s the legend. She’s no longer with us, but she’s the one that got this thing going.”

Turner said Davis wanted to bring Broadway to LaGrange so that locals who have never experienced anything like it could see it.

“That’s what we have done over the years, and we’ve gotten bigger and bigger,” Turner said, saying the show is a blend of Broadway show tunes, pop music and other songs people might be more familiar with.

The concert is primarily a choral performance, but it will feature students from all of LaGrange High School.

“We have about 150 students that will be participating in this event from all walks of life, all age groups, freshmen through seniors, athlete and non-athlete. We’ve got band students involved as well as our Special Grangers. It’s going to be fabulous,” Turner said.

Turner said they will have a live band with professional musicians, who will be joined by LHS band members.

The concert will feature music for every generation including songs from Footloose, Elvis, The Eagles and Broadway.

The concert will be held over three nights at the LaGrange High School Auditorium on N Greenwood St. on Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, April 21-22 at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re very excited, and we just wanted to invite people to come and see what we’ve got going on and how hard these kids have been working,” Turner said. “This is a very big deal to these students and this community. This is a staple of this community, and it has been since 1990.”
