On Friday, musical legends and icons, The Commodores will be hitting the stage at Sweetland Amphitheatre for a night of classic hits.

Brent Gibbs, general manager of Sweetland, said the amphitheater is expecting a great night with  beautiful weather.

“The Commodores sound as good as they ever have and I think everybody’s going to be up for a wonderful show,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said Kameron Corvet, an Atlanta-based singer, will be the opening act.

“I think everyone will find Kameron interesting. He’s going to do an acoustic opening, and he’s originally from Cincinnati. He’s going to be fantastic, and we’re looking forward to it,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said Sweetland has been aggressively pursuing artists that they think would be a good fit for different constituent bases within the city of Lagrange and Troup County.

“There are all kinds of great artists that were pursuing and were able to work it out for the Commodores routing-wise, for all the shows that they’re doing all over the southeast. OIt’s very exciting and we’re certainly thrilled to have someone of their caliber,” Gibbs said.

He said the Commodores could do concert with just their older music and the concert would still be a success.

Gibbs said the sales for the upcoming show have been doing well.

“My guess is by the time it’s all said and done, we’ll have maybe 1,500 to 1,600 people there, which is a great crowd for Sweetland,” Gibbs said. “One thing we’ve noticed is that now that it’s the week of the show, and the weather looks like it’s just going to be fabulous, we’re seeing our daily ticket sales pick up but all signs are looking toward a full house Friday night.”

He said there are currently still tickets left in every price category.

“The Commodores for R&B are iconic, They’re without Lionel Richie these days, but they sound fantastic and do all the hits that people are coming to hear. I think the wonderful thing about the Commodores is that they have transcended through so many ages and cultural contexts,” Gibbs said.

“It’s going to be a great night, and we’re going to see a diverse crowd there. It’s not every day that you get to have an artist, at least in my view, that has some of the songs that are sort of the soundtrack of our lives.”
