An unidentified woman was killed overnight in a car crash off of Highway 18 in Southern Troup County.
Identification of the victim is pending further investigation as there was a vehicle fire and she was not immediately identifiable, according to Deputy Coroner Amy Sheppard.
A 911 call about the crash was received around 11:14 p.m. Wednesday.
Sheppard said the initial information she received indicated that the victim’s vehicle and the vehicle following behind her were on a long straightaway near Drummond Road when they both entered the left lane to pass. They somehow made contact and the victim’s vehicle went a long way off the road into a ditch and caught fire.
The crash is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT).
“Once they finish their investigation and can go out there and look it in daylight, they’ll have a better idea of what happened,” Sheppard said.
Sheppard said the autopsy will determine if the victim died from injuries sustained during the initial crash or from the fire.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
