After a trial run at Troup High and Callaway High to end the 2022-2023 school year, metal detectors have now been installed at all Troup County School System middle and high schools.

It’s been a long process to get to this point.

Last year, the Troup County School Board and Superintendent Brian Shumate organized a task force to study the issue from all angles, including whether or not it was even fiscally possible. Then, once the Ceia Opengate device was selected, TCSS worked to ensure it wouldn’t be a logistical nightmare.

While a lot of planning has gone in, there figures to be a few hiccups as students adjust to them on the first day of school.

But, in the large scheme of things, we’re confident it’ll otherwise be a smooth transition. 

We’re thankful that the board was proactive in getting metal detectors in our schools. 

They will not prevent all crime or problems in our schools by any means, but they will serve as a deterrent to crime and make wrongdoers think twice before they take something in our schools that shouldn’t be there.
