On Aug. 7, American Legion Post 152 will receive a proclamation from the City of Hogansville in honor of Purple Heart Day during the city council meeting. 

George Bailey, Chaplin of American Legion Post 152, said Purple Heart Day is usually observed on Aug. 7 each year and is a time to remember and honor the brave men and women who were either wounded on the battlefield or paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

“Hogansville is a Purple Heart city. To do that, I had to do an article with Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and get it approved by the city council. When it was approved, we got signs to put around the city to show that veterans are welcomed and have support in Hogansville,” Bailey said. “To have Hogansville designated as a Purple Heart City is an honor, and it was a blessing to have so many people behind it.”

Bailey said cities need to be more vocal in honoring all the purple hearts in the city. “I wanted the city to do a proclamation in honoring our purple hearts because there are men and women who have gotten wounded in combat fighting for our freedom in our community. We have a few who have passed, but it’s all about remembering and honoring those who put it all on the line,” Bailey said.

Bailey said he hopes with the proclamation Purple Heart Day will become an annual celebration.

“This proclamation will serve as a thank you to all the veterans that were wounded in combat. We want to honor them because some of them have been forgotten and their memory and love for this country deserves to be recognized,” Bailey said.
