On Friday, the local artists of the Visual Artists Alliance of LaGrange (VAAL) will exhibit their work at the LaGrange Art Museum from Aug. 11 to Sept. 29.

Columbus artist Julianna Wells judged and gave best-in-class ribbons to participants in 13 categories that included best in show, mixed media/3D, painting and paper art. 

Top winners in the VAAL exhibition were Sarah Swanson, Maryse Vaillancourt-Prescott and Steve Close.

Some honorable mentions from the exhibition were Nellie Ralat’s mixed media art titled “Conociendonos- Getting Acquainted II,” Kathi Wilson’s oil painting titled “Hereford,” and Becky Jackson’s paper art titled “Seven Days After 9/11, San Francisco.”

Other artists included in the exhibition are Jaasiel Barrientos, Glynda Benham, Steve Boykin, Jeanine Bradfield, Jennifer Emery, Theresa Fairchild, Nellie Ralat, Maryse Vallencourt-Prescott and Doug Wolfe.

In celebration of the exhibit, LAM will host an opening reception for the public and participating artists from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free to attend and will have light refreshments and a live jazz trio.

Lauren Oliver, interim director of LAM, said they are excited to host the exhibit.

“This one of our most well-attended exhibitions because it’s supporting local artists, and it’s so important to support our artists and allow them to sell their art.  It’s one of our largest attended opening receptions because so many locals come and the artists invite their friends and families,” Oliver said. “The reception is an important celebration of the artists contributions to the community and brings people together to appreciate their talent.”

VAAL President Jennifer Emery said the annual exhibit at LAM is the highlight of the organization’s year.

“Whether it is in the professional setting of our local art museum or because awards are presented, artists always bring their highest quality work. And their talented efforts never fail to impress us,” Emery said.

Oliver said all artwork from the collection will be for sale and 20% of proceeds will go to toward art education programs at the museum.
