LaGRANGE — The Georgia State Patrol released more details of a one-car wreck that killed one person on Interstate 85 about a mile south of the Whitesville Road exit on July 29.

Nicholas Rodriguez Perry, 35, of West Point, died at the scene after the Dodge Charger he was driving smashed into a tree, troopers said.

GSP is not sure when the wreck happened. They received a call from someone who reported seeing a car in the treeline along the northbound lanes of I-85, stated Sgt. 1st Class Maurice Raines, commander of GSP post 2 LaGrange.

Troopers found the car among some trees along the northbound lanes of I-85 about 7 a.m.

According to the crash report, the investigation showed Perry ran off the shoulder in the left lane for an unknown reason. He then over-corrected and rotated counter-clockwise back across both northbound lanes and off the interstate, troopers said. The car flipped over and hit a tree with its roof and windshield before coming to a final rest a few yards away.

The evidence showed Perry was able to free himself from the wreckage and climb out of the Charger before he succumbed to his injuries, troopers stated.

It does not appear that anyone else was in the car at the time of the crash.
