LAGRANGE – He’s going to be a busy Tiger.

When Troup’s football team opens the regular season on Aug. 19 at Hardaway, Jack Schweizer will be spending a lot of time on the field.

Schweizer will be a wide receiver on offense, a safety on defense, and he’ll also be a part of the kicking game.

Considering Schweizer is a senior and this will be his final go-around as a high-school football player, he’s eager to be on the field as often as possible.

“I’m loving it,” Schweizer said at the close of practice on Wednesday. “I’m ready.”

On offense, Schweizer will be a starting wide receiver, and he’ll team up with fellow senior Chanse Hill to give the Tigers a nice one-two combination at that position.

Troup doesn’t figure to be a prolific passing team, so Schweizer won’t be putting up Julio Jones-type numbers, but he’ll likely get his share of balls thrown his way, and when he’s not making catches, he’ll be providing blocks.

On defense, Schweizer will provide a veteran presence at the safety position, and he’ll also be holding on kicks.

“It’s about blocking up, opening holes (at wide receiver), and I’m also holding for kicks and playing a lot of defense, too,” Schweizer said. “So it’s just whatever the coaches need.”

Schweizer is a player second-year head coach Tanner Glisson has come to rely upon.

“He’s real important,” Glisson said. “He’s going to play both sides of the ball. He’s going to play special teams. He’s really been becoming a leader, and pushing the guys. He’s a quality individual we can put out there, and he’s going to make good decisions. He is a program guy. We’re proud of him. He had perfect attendance (at summer workouts). So we’re real pleased with him.”

As one of the team’s seniors, Schweizer takes his role as a team leader seriously.

It’s not just about making plays on a Friday night during the season, but it’s also about showing the way in practice.

When it’s hot, as it is just about every day this time of the year, Schweizer said it’s important for he and the other veterans to keep pushing, to not let the conditions slow them down.

“You just can’t show any signs of weakness,” Schweizer said.

As important as preseason practice is, Schweizer said everyone is eager to get the season started.

The Tigers won’t have to wait long.

Troup has a preseason game at Harris County on Aug. 12, and it will open the season at Hardaway on Aug. 19.

“We’re ready,” Schweizer said. “We talk about it every day. We’re just tired of practicing. We’re ready to go play. We’re ready for next Friday.”
