Callaway started off its season with a bang, dominating its season/region opener against Towers 84-32.
After a somewhat slow start for the Cavaliers in the first quarter, they ran away with it in the second quarter, leaving the final outcome in little doubt long before the final buzzer rang.
Callaway quickly turned its 20-11 lead after the opening quarter into a 44-15 lead at halftime thanks to some suffocating defense that led to some easy Callaway buckets in transition.
Senior Lacey Thomas was everywhere for the Cavaliers and ended up out-scoring the entire Towers team by herself, notching 35 points to start off her final season in red and black in style. She even got to rest during the fourth quarter as she did all her damage in the first three quarters — 10 points in the first. 11 in the second and a whopping 14 in the third as Towers had no answers for her. She got most of her points inside but showed off her versatility by connecting on a couple of 3-pointers.
Tra’Niya Mitchell initiated the offense and played pesky defense all night to confuse the opposing guards. She finished with 13 points and also got a well-deserved fourth-quarter rest like Thomas.
Kenzie Howard gave the Cavaliers a nice third option and finished with 10 points — nine of those coming in the second half.
Raniya Mahone and Aubrey Chelcey finished with nine points and eight points, respectively.
Callaway (1-0) will travel to Valley (AL) on Saturday.
