Troup had no problems dispatching LaFayette 67-35 on Tuesday to win its fourth straight game on the young season.
It was the dynamic young duo of freshman Ma’liyah Gilbert and sophomore Sheniyah Philpot that led the way for the Tigers, scoring 25 points and 20 points, respectively. Gilbert is averaging well over 20 points per game in her first season as a Tiger.
Phillip was dealing with a hand injury to start the season but looks to be healthy now and is one of the only players on the team that played meaningful basketball a season ago.
The Troup defense, the bread and butter of the team since Carla Thornton took over as head coach, was in full display on Tuesday night. The team only allowed six points in each of the first two quarters to build an insurmountable 39-12 lead at the break.
Philpot came out of the gates in attack mode, scoring 11 points in the first quarter to set the tone for the game. She passed the torch to Gilbert, who poured in 11 of her own in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs got a little bit of traction in the second half, but the Tigers were still able to outscore them 26-23 over the final two quarters of play.
Jaz Williams had 7 points for the Tigers and was their third-leading scorer in the game as they relied heavily on their two heavy hitters on Tuesday.
Troup (3-1) will have its most important game of the season so far when the Tigers travel to take on Fayette County on Friday for their region opener.
