The LaGrange baseball team took a trip to Alabama on Wednesday and returned to the Peach State with an 8-2 victory over Smiths Station.
It did not take the Grangers very long to take a lead, putting four runs past the Panthers in the top of the first.
Robbie Parker got the action started by grounding into a fielder’s choice that drove in a run. With two outs, Brandon Bennett came through in a big way with a two-run single. Parker eventually scored as well, stealing home to make it 4-0.
Despite the Panthers scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to halve the lead, LaGrange never looked back from there and led the entire game.
LaGrange was eventually able to find some breathing room in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to take a 7-2 lead. Parker came through again, hitting a double to drive in the first two runs and eventually scored later in the inning himself on an error. The senior had three RBIs and three runs scored on the day.
Parker scored his third and final run of the game in the top of the seventh when he scored on an error.
LaGrange got strong pitching from starter Caden Wood, who went five innings while allowing just four hits on seven strikeouts. Rob Skinner and Mason Calhoun pitched an inning each and picked up the baton from Wood in style as they combined to allow just one hit on three strikeouts.
Bennett and Skinner both had strong games from the plate, both going 2-for-4. Jackson Bozeman and Tanner Langley both had a hit in the game.
LaGrange is still undefeated (4-0) after the opening couple of weeks of the season. The Grangers will have their toughest test yet on Thursday when they host Columbus.
