The Troup baseball team had to wait for a breakthrough, but they got it late as a seven-run fifth inning was enough to come from behind to beat Northgate 8-3.

The Vikings struck first in the top of the second before adding two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.

Troup dug deep and stunned Northgate with seven runs in the bottom of that very same inning. Davis Moncus scored on a wild pitch to get the Tigers on the board. The next six runs in the inning came with two outs as the Tigers showed great poise under pressure.

Cason Spears scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to just one run before Fisher Baltzell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game up at three runs each. 

Ethan Goff was then hit by a pitch to drive in the fourth run that gave Troup its first lead of the contest. Moncus continued his big night with a three-run double to give Troup a commanding 7-3 lead. 

Moncus was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. 

The Tigers tacked on an eighth run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of an error by the Northgate defense. 

The Vikings got a two-out single that drove in a run in the top of the seventh, but never truly threatened the Tigers’ lead late.

Tripp Cummings got the start on the mound and pitched a strong 4 ⅓ innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs on seven strikeouts. Demetrius Hardnett came into the game in the fifth and pitched the final 2 ⅔ innings, slamming the door on any attempted rally from the Vikings. Hardnett allowed just three hits and one earned run on six strikeouts. 

Garrison Edwards, Carson Walker and Spears all had a hit apiece in the game. 

Troup (5-5) has now won three games in a row after dropping the previous three. The Tigers will look to make it four in a row when they travel to take on Pike County next Tuesday — Troup beat Pike County 4-3 earlier this week.
