The Troup Tigers saw their six-game winning streak snapped on Thursday as they fell to Whitewater 5-1 at home in an important early season region game. It was a letdown for Troup, who went on the road on Tuesday and earned a 3-1 win over the Wildcats.
Whitewater opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning and the game stayed poised at 1-0 for the majority of the afternoon.
Troup had a couple of chances to tie the game up, but the offense could never quite put it together for a complete inning on Thursday. Eventually, the Wildcats broke the game open with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Troup was finally able to put a run on the board when Fisher Baltzell led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and Torreion Delaney followed with a single to bring him home.
The Wildcats immediately recaptured their four-run lead in the top of the seventh and sat down the Tigers in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Demetrius Hardnett got the start on the mound for Troup and was tremendous in his five innings of work, allowing just one hit and no earned runs on five strikeouts. Tripp Cummings and Davis Moncus split the final two innings on the mound.
Baltzell had a strong showing at the plate, going 2-for-3. Garrison Edwards, Moncus and Delaney all had a hit apiece for Troup.
Troup is now 8-6 on the season. The Tigers will have a tough region matchup on Friday with Starr’s Mill coming to town.
