On Tuesday, the LaGrange City Council approved an extension of Lakeland Drive for the Highland Park subdivision.

Community Development Director Alton West explained that the roadway has already been completed by the developer, as has water and sewer infrastructure. The city is simply accepting the privately built roadway as a city street.

The extension of Lakeland will circle and tie back into Lakeland, which intersects with Buckeye Lane. Any further extension would be at Pineland Drive, but there are no plans at this time for extending it there.

Along with the 1,183 feet of roadway, the city will accept 1,206 feet of water lines and 122 feet of sewer lines.

The sewer lines, water lines and the road were paid for by the subdivision developer, but they will be maintained in the future by the city. The road lights will be maintained by the subdivision because they wanted an alternate style of lights for the community.

The council unanimously voted to approve the acceptance of the roadway, water and sewer lines.

A first reading was also held for naming the extension of the street as Lakeland Drive.

In other business, the council approved a resolution authorizing the mayor and clerk to quitclaim a gas pipeline easement south of the LaGrange Mall.

City Manager Patrick Bowie said the city was approached by the owner of the property, which has a pipeline easement for a natural gas pipeline attached to the property dating back to the  1950s. The easement was never used and doesn’t have any use to the city today, he said, so the owner has asked the city to abandon its rights to the easement.

“We’ve reviewed the request, and we couldn’t put sewer on it without getting another easement anyway, and there’s no need to put gas through there,” Bowie said. “We feel good about abandoning the easement as it is.”

The resolution was unanimously approved by the council.
