Tuesday is election day, with eleven races on the ballot in Troup County. May 21 will be the General Primary and Nonpartisan Election in the state of Georgia. The partisan candidates will hold the primaries, with the republican, democratic and independent winners moving on to the general election, which will be decided in November.
Tuesday is an even bigger day for the partisan candidates running, who could win seats. If one candidate in a race does not get the majority of the votes, over 50 percent, then runoff elections will be held on June 18.
There are two special elections, including one for mayor of LaGrange, on the ballot. Both the mayor of LaGrange and District 1 City Council seat will be decided May 21. The elections will fill the unexpired term of the late mayor, Willie T. Edmondson and Councilmember Jim Arrington, who resigned to run for mayor.
There are 14 precincts for Troup residents. The precinct map can be found on the Troup County Board of Elections website. To check your voter registration status and look at sample ballots for the election, go to Georgia’s My Voter Page at https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/.
Those hoping to vote must be registered 30 days before an election day. For future elections, those unregistered can register online at https://registertovote.sos.ga.gov/. To receive a mail-in voter registration form contact the Troup County Board of Elections, public libraries, public assistance offices, schools, and other government offices.
The May 21 primary will also include state and federal primaries, notably including the Georgia District 3 U.S. House of Representative seat of former West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson. Ferguson announced his intention to retire after this term in December.
