The GHSA 4A state boys and girls golf tournaments held right in Troup County are in the books. It was a warm two days at The Fields as the girls battled it out on day one and the conditions were no different for the boys at Highlands Country Club. 

LaGrange High played host and saw its boys’ team finish in sixth place, just three strokes behind Holy Innocents’ in fifth while the girls improved on last year’s performance by finishing 11th this year. North Oconee won the boys and girls state championships 

 

GIRL’S FINISH: 

North Oconee came out on top, shooting a 516 across the two days to just edge out North Hall (522) and Madison County (523). The Grangers finished comfortably in 11th place, 23 strokes behind Wayne County in 10th and 38 strokes ahead of Trinity Christian. 

Caroline Brown had the strongest two-day showing for the Grangers, shooting a 209 over the two days to finish in a tie for 34th place. Hudson Wood and Kate Hale finished 45th and 46 respectively. Brown had the best card from any Granger across the two days, shooting a 104 on day two. Wood improved her play by five strokes and shot a 109 on day two. Shelby Siggers shot a 120 while Katie Hale and Carlee Roland each shot a 123. Hale, a sophomore, had a tremendous showing on day one, but could not quite match it on day two.

 

BOY’S FINISH:

Much like their female counterparts, it was the Titans that took the state championship. North Oconee ran away with it on day two and beat second-place Benedictine by 19 strokes. The Grangers just narrowly missed out on a chance to finish in the top 5 of state, falling just three strokes short. They did just narrowly edge out North Hall by one stroke to finish sixth.

LaGrange sat in ninth place after day one, but put together a monster performance on Tuesday. Senior Ty Ormsby and sophomore Hugh Kersey led the charge for the Granger as they climbed up the leaderboard. The two each carded a 76, tied for the 13th-lowest individual score on day two. This helped power the Grangers to the fourth-lowest team score on day two.

Sophomore Charlie Pitts also came through in a big way, shooting a 79 for one of his best rounds of the year. Sophomore Saxon Chastain and senior Ben Woodham each shot an 80 while junior Grady Westmoreland shot a 93. 

It was a huge bounce-back performance for the Grangers.

 

GIRL’S DAY ONE:

The Grangers finished day one in 10th place with an overall combined score of 326, 28 shots behind Cedartown in ninth place and four shots ahead of Area foe Trinity Christian.

It was the sophomore show for the Grangers with Brown and Hale leading the way. Brown shot a 105, good enough for 36th overall individually and Hale was just behind her with a 107. Wood shot a 114 and the lone senior on the team, Roland, shot a 117. Siggers shot a 131 to round out the Grangers on the course for day one. 

Madison County led after day one with a score of 258, just ahead of North Oconee (261) and North Hall (263). 

 

BOY’S DAY ONE:

The boys’ leaderboard was a bit more compact with only 33 strokes separating the leader, Lovett (312), and the 12-place Central Carrollton Lions (345) after day one. Hot on Lovett’s heels are North Oconee (317), Benedictine (319) and Westminster (323).

LaGrange sat in ninth place with a score of 336. The Grangers were just seven strokes back from North Hall, Trinity Christian and Holy Innocents’, who are all tied for fifth place.

Unsurprisingly, it was sophomore star Saxon Chastain leading the way for the Grangers, shooting a 79 which put him tied for 12th overall after day one. Ormsby had a strong showing on day one with an 82 as he looked to go out with a bang. Kersey shot an 87 while Woodham shot an 88. Charlie Pitts and Grady Westmoreland shot an 89 and 91, respectively.
