Don Weatherington Aquatics Center at the William Griggs Center is set to open at the end of June.
Troup County Commission Chairman Patrick Crews announced during a talk at the LaGrange Lions Club on Tuesday that a grand opening will be held for the pool on June 27, 2024.
The new pool and pool house are part of the second phase of renovations to the Grigg Center, which cost around $5 million.
Funding for the projects was provided by the Callaway Foundation ($1 million), the Governor’s Office ($2.2 million), SPLOST ($1.5 million) and the City of LaGrange ($300,000).
Crews said that the Callaway Foundation also recently agreed to provide $25,000 to help pay for training lifeguards for the facility.
“One of the challenges we have had in our community is we did not have a pool that we could teach swimming lessons to children,” Crews said. “You have to have a three-foot pool to teach swimming lessons. When the Mike Daniel Center was built that was a four-foot pool. That pool is used a lot by the college and high school also adults for swim therapy, but we had a real challenge in the fact that we didn’t have a place in our community to teach swim lessons.”
Crews said that the new pool at Griggs will be designed so they can offer swim lessons. It will also include a kiddie pool area with spray attractions and a water slide. Parking will also be added to the facility.
“Several parents had told me that when they went over for basketball there was not adequate parking in that area so we will be adding to the parking lot,” Crews said.
