Rex Scott beat incumbent Lewis Davis for the Troup County Commissioner District 3 Republican nomination, on Tuesday’s run-off election. There are currently no Democratic or Independent candidates for the seat, so Scott will likely run unopposed in November.

Scott received 53.05 percent of the votes in District 3, compared to Davis’ 46.95 percent. All in all, Scott won by 67 votes. The results are unofficial but all precincts have reported in, including early voting and mail-in results.

“A lot of folks during the runoff, really came through for me, and I really appreciate that,” Scott said.” As far as Lewis [Davis] goes, me and him, we’ve been friends, we will remain friends.”

Scott said he is excited to get into the role and start learning. 

“We got some new revenue, from different areas, seeing how it plays into the current budget….looking at public safety, for sure, infrastructure,” Scott said of his priorities once in office. “Of course, looking to see some relief for some of the senior citizens, like property tax, if the revenue will allow.”

Davis had served as the District 3 representative for two terms. His term will end on December 31. In concession, Davis thanked Scott for running a good, clean race.

“I appreciate my supporters and everybody that worked hard for me,” Davis said. “It’s time to let somebody else take the reins and see what they can do with it. But I appreciate the voters of my district allowing me to serve two terms.”

Overall voter turnout for the runoff was low, with 8.7 percent across the county. District 3 had a slightly higher turnout with 10.89 percent of registered voters coming out to the polls.
