The City of LaGrange is considering raising the speed limit of Ann Bailey Way.
On Tuesday, the LaGrange City Council held a first reading for an ordinance that would increase the maximum speed limit of Ann Bailey Way from 35 to 45 miles per hour.
Mayor Jim Arrington said Ann Bailey Way is a section of the bypass near Franklin Forest Elementary. It’s the only part of the bypass that is 35 mph. The rest of it is 45 mph, he said.
Police Chief Garrett Fiveash indicated that a traffic study was completed on the area, which did meet the requirements of raising the speed limit.
“Our recommendation is to raise the posted speed limit to 45. The school zone speed limit would then be 35 during intake and egress times,” Fiveash said.
The council had asked for the traffic study during discussions of the new school zone speed cameras, noting that the 25 mph school zone limit was potentially too low.
No vote was held on the issue, as it was just a first reading, though the council did appear to be in consensus agreement with the change during its morning work session.
A second reading and vote is expected to be held at the Aug. 13 council meeting.
