On July 24, at 6:03 a.m., firefighters with the LaGrange Fire Department, along with a unit from the Troup County Fire Department, responded to 319 Young’s Mill Road after reports of smoke and flames were visible in the kitchen area.
Firefighters arrived to find a two-story duplex with light smoke coming from the kitchen. The tenants from both units were safely outside by the time help arrived.
Firefighters entered the building with a fire extinguisher and discovered a small fire on the stove and in the cabinets above it and were able to quickly extinguish the fire. After ensuring the fire was under control, the team checked for any hidden flames in the walls and ceiling around the fire’s origin. Additional firefighters arrived on the scene to assist. They set up a fan to help clear smoke from the building and worked together to search the neighboring unit, 317.
In unit 317, firefighters found some heat and smoke damage but no active flames. They thoroughly inspected both units to ensure safety and extinguish any remaining hot spots. The electric company was called to disconnect power for safety.
An estimated $17,000 worth of property and content loss was suffered. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to unattended cooking.
