The 15th annual Haircutz and Stylez 4 Kidz event was held on Sunday at the William J. Griggs Recreation Center.
The event, sponsored by Positive Contributions, was started as a way to give back to the community by providing free haircuts and hairstyles as well as back-to-school supplies and backpacks to the community’s youth.
Positive Contributions is a non-profit organization located in Troup County. They provide education and outreach services to the Central Georgia area.
Michael Fannin, CEO of Positive Contributions, comes from a family of helping those in need and he wanted to keep that trend going.
“It’s a blessing to be able to help those in need,” said Fannin.
There were over 50 volunteers at the event who made sure that everything was set up and checked on the barbers and stylists throughout the event to make sure that they had what they needed.
“Most people here are members of my family, friends, and business acquaintances,” said Fannin.
In total, there were 23 barber and hairstylist chairs. All were manned by barbers and stylists from different areas including West Point, GA, Rome, GA, Columbus, GA, Hogansville, GA, LaGrange, GA and other cities.
There were also over 20 vendors in attendance giving out healthcare supplies, school supplies and back-to-school information. Positive Contributions was handing out backpacks and school supplies. Latavia’s Closet Inc., from Cusseta, GA, gave out free kid’s clothes and shoes. UrgenCare Clinic was onsite providing free sports physicals to sixth graders and older. Other vendors in attendance were TCSS, Communities in Schools, Sparkles Cookies, Amerigroup Real Solutions, Girl Scouts of the USA and more.
To help make the event fun for the kids, there was music playing in the background, a nail polishing table, an arts and crafts table and hula hoops. A selfie station was provided by Grab a Prop and Strike a Pose from Hogansville. The Jungle Bus was there for the kids to check out some books to take home. Kids Zone Dentistry was on hand doing airbrush tattoos. To help cool everyone off, Spiritual Hydration was handing out samples of their all-natural smoothies.
Fannin would like to keep the event growing in years to come.
As he looked around the center and scanned the crowd, he said, “It was not like this 10 years ago, not even 5 years ago. We’re going to keep trying to add to the event by staying involved and making the right connections. It will all come full circle.”
