The LaGrange football team put on a show at Callaway Stadium, trouncing Harris County 27-13. The Tigers are coming off a season in which they went 11-2 and made the Elite Eight in 5A, though they have dropped down to 4A for the upcoming season.

After a punt on their initial possession, the Grangers were fortunate to recover a muffed punt at the Tigers’ 43-yard line.  LaGrange quickly made them pay for their error as Junior quarterback Dylan Barber connected with Julian Jones on a 43-yard touchdown pass on the first play following the muffed punt.

The Grangers defense took the field for the first time with a 6-0 lead (after a blocked extra point). The defense paid the offense back when Kayden Sutton intercepted a deep pass from the Tigers on LaGrange’s 14-yard line.

The Grangers got a little risky on its following drive, going for and converting a fourth and short at their own 25-yard line. It paid off in a big way as LaGrange marched down the field and scored to take a two-possession lead. Malachi Fannin-Render punched it in from a couple of yards out to give LaGrange a 13-0 lead.

The defense held up again, forcing a three-and-out, but Barbers was sacked and lost possession of the ball and the Tigers came away with it in the ensuing scrum.

Harris County would make the Grangers pay, driving down the field and scoring on an 8-yard touchdown pass.

Immediately following the Tigers cutting the deficit to 13-7, a 50-minute lightning delay sapped the energy out of the stadium.

The game stalled out late in the second quarter and early in the third quarter. That was until Barber showed off his top-end speed by scoring on a 75-yard touchdown run, giving LaGrange a 20-7 lead with 3:40 left in the third quarter.

Less than two minutes later it was 27-7 after Caydin Thomas streaked down the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown.

Harris County cut into the deficit with a 3-yard touchdown pass with 4:32 left in the game.

The Grangers will kick off the entire high school football slate next Wednesday at Kell High School against Douglass.
