One local woman’s effort to connect with her daughters has turned into a blooming business.
April Dulin and her daughters Taylor, 12, and Kileigh Thompson, 14, began making soap during COVID and have since expanded the hobby with different offerings selling bath goods across several counties and around the world online.
The trio created the business West Point Saponification to bond and make money to support their hobbies.
Dulin said they began during the pandemic when her daughters were stuck at home from school.
“It was just kind of a hobby that we were doing with friends and my daughters and I turned it into a business selling it,” Dulin said.
Dulin said they are currently offering shea butters, goat’s milk and beer soaps, along with bath balms, lotions and beard oils.
The mother and her daughters offer their goods online and at the Reunion store in Downtown West Point. They have also set up shops as vendors at events in Newnan and West Point. Dulin said they plan to sell their soaps in Pine Mountain, Warm Springs and Columbus in the fall.
Most of the business the trio have gotten is selling to local residents but they do sell items at their Etsy shop, Dulin said.
“Our business has just grown through word of mouth, through people here in Troup County,” she said.
Making the soaps has helped Dulin and her daughters grow closer as they grow the business.
“We do it together. My 14-year-old is doing the marketing and doing the wrappings and creating the advertising parts. And then my 12-year-old is doing the designs and making the embeds and stuff like that,” Dulin said.
They all share the proceeds from the shop.
Dulin said Kileigh plays softball for LaGrange High School and she uses her percentage to buy gear and equipment with the money she has been making. Taylor is into photography and drawing so she uses her part to support those hobbies.
Dulin said they are looking for a location to sell their goods in LaGrange and hope to have their own shop at some point.
“My daughters are hoping that when they go to college, they can take pieces of it with them to work and sell in whatever state they’re going to college,” she said.
