The Callaway softball team got a much-needed victory on Wednesday, beating Shaw 8-1 to snap a three-game losing streak.
The Cavaliers struck first in the bottom of the second when Blakelea Speer walked with the bases loaded to score a run. Despite having the bases loaded with just one out, the Cavaliers could not add to their lead.
Callaway eventually did add to its lead with a two-run third inning. Bella Cleveland and Brianna Patillo hit back-to-back one-run singles to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead.
The Raiders would eventually get on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Cavaliers’ offense could not be slowed down. Freshman Ella Kelly drove home a pair of runs with a triple and Mikayla Blankenship grounded out to drive home the final run of the inning and give Callaway a 6-1 lead.
The Cavaliers’ offense just kept on tacking on runs, taking an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Karlie Walker hit a two-run single to drive home both runs in the inning.
Bella Cleveland got the start in the circle and pitched a strong five innings in which she struck out seven batters and allowed just two hits and no earned runs. Mackenzie Toney came into the game to relieve her and pitched the final two innings, slamming the door on any attempted rally from the Raiders.
Kelly, Blankenship and Brianna Pattillo led the attack for the Callaway offense with two hits apiece. Walker, Cleveland, Keira Trone and Lakyn Gatens all had a hit each.
Callaway is now 2-6 on the season and remains 0-1 in region play. The Cavaliers will host Pike County for a region game on Thursday.
