The Callaway softball team took a road trip to Macon on Tuesday and returned to Troup County with their first region win of the season after dominating Westside 18-0.

Offense has been in short supply for the Cavaliers at times this season, but not on Tuesday. The team tallied 12 hits in a game that lasted just three innings.

Callaway put the hammer down early, scoring 10 runs in the top of the first to take a commanding lead. Kinley Smith scored on a passed ball for the opening run of the game and the Cavaliers were off to the races from there. Lakyn Gatens and Madison Kemp both stole home to make it 3-0. Mackenzie Toney followed with a two-run triple. Kaitlyn Williams hit a triple later in the inning to bring home a run and stretch the Callaway lead out to seven runs. Williams stole home later in the inning for the eighth run of the game.

Freshman Ella Kelly rounded out the offense in the inning when she hit a two-run single.

Callaway added two runs to its lead in the second inning courtesy of an error and a Jackie Pitts one-run single.

The Cavaliers finished the game off with six runs in the top of the third to trigger the mercy rule. Kelly got the fun started in the inning when she hit a double to drive home two runs.

The freshman was immense from the plate, going 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Her first season with the varsity team has been special so far as she leads the team in batting average (.483), hits (14), RBIs (7) and is tied for the team lead in runs scored (8).

After Kelly’s double, Kemp scored on a passed ball and Layla Elkins hit a double to drive in two runs and give the Cavaliers a 16-0 advantage. Bella Cleveland put two more runs on the board for Callaway with a double to center field.

Mackenzie Toney got the start in the circle and pitched two nearly flawless innings, striking out three batters and not allowing a single hit. Elkins pitched the final inning in relief.

Kemp had two hits while Toney, Cleveland, Smith and Elkins all had one apiece.

Callaway improved to 3-8 on the season and 1-2 in region play. The Cavaliers will rematch Westside at Shuford Fields on Thursday.
