The Callaway softball team is finding its groove. The Cavaliers were back in action Tuesday after a short Labor Day break and earned a tough 5-1 win over region foe Rutland.
A combination of the bats coming alive and strong pitching got the job done on Thursday.
The game featured a stalemate early until the Cavaliers broke the deadlock with a lone run in the top of the third inning. Karlie Walker got the fun started with a single that sent Madison Kemp home.
The game would stay at 1-0 until the Cavaliers put two more runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. An error allowed the first run to score and a Walker RBI single made it 3-0.
Rutland got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning but never truly threatened the lead thanks to starting pitcher Mackenzie Toney and her defense. Toney pitched a complete game in which she struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits and no earned runs.
The Cavaliers tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Ella Kelly hit a double to drive home the first and then Toney proceeded to aid her cause from the plate by hitting a one-run single.
Kelly, Toney, Walker and Kemp led the way for the offense with two hits apiece while Lakyn Gatens, Bella Cleveland and Kinley Smith all had one each.
Callaway is now 4-8 on the season. After starting out 0-2 in region play the Cavaliers have bounced back in a big way to get to 2-2. The Cavaliers will be back in action on Wednesday against Bowdon on the road before returning home for an important region rematch with Rutland.
