The Callaway softball team played its third game in the last three days on Thursday and earned an important region win, dominating Rutland 13-1 at Shuford Fields.
The Cavaliers put a marker down early with three runs in the bottom of the first after a scoreless top half of the inning. Ella Kelly grounded out to drive in the first run of the game. A passed ball and an error allowed two more runs to score in the inning.
Kelly, just a freshman, has been on fire to start her varsity career and continued that with a 2-for-3 performance with five RBIs.
The Cavaliers added two runs to their lead in the second courtesy of a two-run single by Kelly.
Callaway completely blew the game open in the third inning with a whopping eight runs to push the lead out to 13-0.
Kaitlyn Williams walked with the bases loaded to drive in the first run of the inning. Kinley Smith hit a one-run single to make it 7-0. Karlie Walker hit a one-run single followed by a two-run single from Kelly to push the lead out to double figures. The Cavaliers added three more runs in the inning on a series of errors from the Rutland defense. Rutland eventually got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth but it served as little more than consolation.
Smith led the way for the offense alongside Kelly. The former was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Kemp, Walker, and Lakyn Gatens all had a hit apiece for the Cavaliers.
Mackenzie Toney got the start in the circle for Callaway and pitched all four innings, striking out five batters while allowing just two hits and one earned run.
Callaway improved to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in region play. The Cavaliers will return to action next Monday at home against Starr’s Mill.
