The LaGrange softball team cruised to a region win on Tuesday, hammering Fayette County 16-4.
Despite the final score being lopsided in the Grangers’ favor, it was actually the Tigers that took the first lead with a run in the top of the first.
The Fayette County lead would not last as LaGrange immediately took the lead in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs. Abby McGill hit a color homer to tie the game. Hudson Wood hit a one-run triple to drive in the second run and give the Grangers a lead they would never surrender.
LaGrange would completely blow the game open with ten runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kimberly Reynolds hit a two-run single to get the scoring started. An error allowed a fifth run in the game to score for the Grangers.
Carolyne Garcia hit a three-run homer to give the Grangers a commanding 8-1 lead. Clary Anne Adcock hit a two-run double followed by a one-run double from Tatiana Dudley. Freshman Dakota McDaniel got in on the fun with an RBI single.
The Tigers would not go down without a fight and struck back with three runs in the top of the third to avoid an early mercy rule.
The Grangers got a run back in the bottom of the third as Garcia hit her second home run of the game.
Garcia was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored to help power the Granger offense to victory.
LaGrange eventually was able to trigger the mercy rule with three runs in the fourth inning. Wood hit a two-run double and Reynolds scored on a passed ball to round out the scoring on the evening.
Garcia stole the headlines with her two-home run performance but it was Reynolds, in her second to last game as a Granger (the senior has season-ending surgery scheduled for Thursday), who showed all the tools from the plate. She was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
McGill and Wood also impressed with two hits apiece while McDaniel, Dudley, Jasoa Swanson, Tatum Nation, Taylor Nation and Ta’Niya Taylor all had a hit each.
Senior Zoe Thompson got the start in the circle and pitched all four innings for LaGrange, allowing seven hits on six strikeouts.
LaGrange improved to 11-6 overall and 7-3 in region play. The Grangers will return to action at home on Wednesday in a region matchup with Spalding.
