Thursday night’s Troup County School Board meeting had a packed house for student and staff recognitions.

The evening began with an invocation from some of the students from THINC Academy. Then two groups of students were called up to receive recognition, the Troup 8U AA All-Stars Tournament team and their 10U All-Star team counterparts.

Team Troup 8U played in the Diamond Youth Baseball World Series, against teams from around the country. They finished fifth in the tournament. The 10U squad represented Team Georgia in Bossier City, Louisiana at their World Series tournament, going 1-3.

The final student recognition of the night was for Madison Murphy. Murphy was a finalist for AAA Division Cheerleader of the Year. The athletes were scored on academics, community service, leadership, essay, interview and performance. She cheered as a part of the Troup High School squid in August at the competition in Columbus.

After the students took their seats, it was the adult’s turn. Dr. Britney Matheny was celebrated for earning her doctorate degree in Educational Leadership Policy from Texas Tech University. She successfully defended her thesis on the effectiveness of Georgia Special Education Services.

Finally, the three TCSS employees featured in LDN’s 20 under 40 section, Marius Truitt, Quinshada Simpson and Dee Franklin, were recognized. Their individual features can be found on the LDN website.

The actual agenda for the meeting was short. The board approved the creation of three PTO booster clubs, Troup High School JROTC PTO, Callaway High School FFA Booster Club and Long Cane Middle School Blue Team Booster Club (Competition Cheer). They also approved the school board meeting and work session dates for the 2025 calendar year. Those dates can be found on the school district’s website.
