The Troup football team is finding its groove. The Tigers had no problems with Fayette County on Friday night, earning a dominant 54-20 homecoming win.
Troup took advantage of a lackluster Fayette County team from the off. The Tigers won the coin toss, elected to receive the ball first and then proceeded to march right down the field for a touchdown. The running game got the team deep in the red zone with Javarris Warner chewing off big gains on the ground to lead the way. The Tigers would find the end zone on their first pass attempt of the game as Chase Mosley found Davis Moncus for an 8-yard score.
Fayette County quickly went three-and-out on its first offensive possession of the game as Joshua Bradfield came up with a big sack on third down to force the punt.
Troup’s offense let Fayette County grab a bit of the momentum when a fumble was recovered by the defense in Troup territory. The Fayette County offense responded and tied the game up at a touchdown apiece.
Troup would buckle down and eventually retake the lead on the first play of the second quarter as Amarius Perdue took the ball out of the wildcat and muscled his way into the end zone from a yard out. A missed extra point kept the Troup lead at 13-7.
The Troup defense also responded on the next drive as a sack from Bubba Taylor led Fayette County to punt on the next drive. Troup marched right down the field with Trent Hodo punching the ball in on a 5-yard run to put Troup up by two scores.
From there it was all Troup. The defense forced a turnover on downs on the ensuing Fayette County possession which eventually led to a 16-yard touchdown run from Warner.
Warner got his second just before half to give the Tigers a commanding 34-7 lead heading into the break.
Troup would not let up, forcing a punt on the opening possession of the half which Tyreon Smith took 55 yards to the house.
Monty Heard scored on a short touchdown run in the third and Hodo capped off a big day for himself and the team with a rushing touchdown in the fourth.
Fayette County scored a couple of touchdowns late in the game that served as little more than consolation.
Troup improved to 3-2 on the season and have now won two straight. The Tigers will get a chance to get healthy during a bye week next week before returning to action on Oct. 4 on the road to Upson-Lee.
