It’s not an end. It’s just the start of a new chapter.
Plum Southern will soon be closing the doors on its brick-and-mortar shop on Main Street in Downtown LaGrange, but it’s not going out of business. The shop will be moving to be fully online due to increased costs.
Shop owner Kristin Sullivan said with recent rent increases and more people shopping online, it is no longer fiscally responsible to have a physical storefront.
Sullivan said their rent doubled at their Main Street location, where she said they have been fighting leaks for more than a year after the tornadoes in 2023.
“We just decided that there’s a lot of people that are shopping online now between Amazon and different platforms, and we figured we might as well try to join them,” Sullivan said. “The rent kind of sealed the deal.”
Sullivan said their inventory will be moved to a warehouse where they will continue to ship or deliver items. The store already has a successful online shop.
“Our bridal registry program, which is kind of what we’re known for, will be relocated to the chapel on Clark Street, next to Pure Life,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan said bridal registration customers can place orders online and then set an appointment to come in and pick up items or select new items at the Pure Life chapel.
While the online shop has been successful so far, jumping to fully virtual is a new endeavor.
“A lot of people like to come and shop on Main Street in LaGrange and like to walk around,” Sullivan said. “It will be very well missed, but we just financially cannot justify paying that much in rent.”
Sullivan said their goal is to keep most of the items they currently carry in the shop available from their online shop.
Plum Southern is a luxury gift shop that specializes in bridal registry programs.
“People come here to register for gifts, for their wedding showers, their bridal showers, and everyday wedding stuff. I carry China, glassware, wine, housewares, baby, pet, holiday, faith-based items, and local LaGrange items,” Sullivan said. “We have every department in our store, and a lot of it will still be available online.”
Friday, Sep. 27, will be the final day for the Main Street shop. Sullivan said everything in the shop is half off as they prepare for the move. The shop will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Friday.
