The Lafayette Christian football team got its biggest win of the season, knocking off reigning state champion Unity 38-26 at home on Saturday. The game was originally scheduled for Friday before being rescheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. after inclement weather rolled in earlier this week.
The Cougars drew first blood when Connor Hudson took a handoff six yards for a touchdown after a strong opening drive. The two-point conversion was no good.
The Lions answered right back with a long drive for a touchdown on their opening possession of the game, taking an 8-6 lead after a successful two-point conversion. Unity was not done there, blocking a punt on the ensuing LCS drive. The Lions took over at the 5-yard line and quickly punched it in to take a 14-6 lead.
The Cougars responded on offense when David Karvelas hit Hudson for a 38-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good as the home team settled for a two-point deficit.
The Cougars got the ball back after a punt with a chance to retake the lead, but an interception return for a touchdown pushed the Unity lead out to 20-12.
The Cougar offense did not let this faze them and responded with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Karvelas to Noah Childree. The two-point conversion was once again no good as LCS trailed 20-18 heading into halftime.
Lafayette Christian was eventually able to retake the lead courtesy of a 26-yard touchdown pass from Karvelas to Logan Childree. A successful two-point conversion gave the Cougars a 26-20 lead with 5:24 left in the third quarter.
The game would stay at 26-20 until an interception from the Lions set up the offense inside the 10-yard line and they capitalized, scoring a touchdown to tie the game with 6:26 left in the game.
The Cougars would get the winning score with 3:59 left in the game as Karvelas plunged over the goal line on a quarterback sneak. The drive belonged to Noah Childree, whose big 55-yard run set up the Cougars at the 4-yard line.
The defense came through all day against a potent Lions attack, but no defensive play was as important as Eli Carroll’s deflected pass on fourth down that gave the ball back to the Cougar offense, who responded with a dagger 49-yard touchdown run from Karvelas.
Lafayette Christian has won two games in a row to improve to 5-1. The Cougars will travel to Central Christian next Friday for just their second road game of the season.
