Former Governor Nathan Deal will be visiting LaGrange next week to promote his new children’s book, Veto, the Governor’s Cat.
On Thursday, Oct. 10, the Friends of LaGrange Library will host a fireside chat and book signing event at the LaGrange Memorial Library at 5 p.m. featuring Gov. Deal and illustrator Cheryl Riner.
Inspired by his late wife Sandra’s commitment to childhood literacy and her deep love for animals, Deal authored Veto, The Governor’s Cat, a heartwarming tale that follows the adventures of Veto and Bill, two lovable rescue cats who found their forever home in the Governor’s Mansion.
The story follows the moment Veto arrives at the mansion as a curious kitten to his current days with the governor in Habersham County. The book offers lessons on patience, kindness, and friendship.
Through Veto’s eyes, children learn the importance of accepting differences and trying new things. The narrative gently guides young readers through complex emotions, offering valuable lessons on understanding grief and loss.
Deal wrote the book after his wife Sandra was diagnosed with brain cancer and was able to read it to her right before she passed away in 2022.
The mission of the book is to raise awareness for children’s literacy. It’s aimed at kids around the second and third grades, with the third grade in particular being a critical year for kids in reading.
Proceeds from the book are going to children’s literacy organizations to help fund projects.
Deal will visit the LaGrange Memorial Library on Oct. 10 for a moderated discussion on the book, followed by a question and answer session and a book signing. The next day, Deal will visit two Troup County Schools, Clearview Elementary and Hogansville Elementary, to read a portion of the book to students.
The event is free to attend, and refreshments will be provided. Copies of Veto The Governor’s Cat will be available for purchase and signing.
