Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Troup softball team had no problems on Monday brushing aside Fayette County 13-0 in a game that lasted just 3.5 innings.

Troup opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first courtesy of a one-run single from Camdyn Bassett. The Tigers would go on to completely blow the game open in the second inning with seven runs.

Gracie Baker hit a one-run double to get the scoring party started in the second. Three more runs would score in the inning on two different errors to make it 5-0. Kaitlyn Smalley and Bassett hit back-to-back one-run triples to push the Troup lead out the seven runs. Sheniyah Philpot got an RBI groundout to round out the scoring in the inning.

The Tigers would put a bow on top of the game with an additional five runs in the third. An error allowed Kaylee Cardwell to score and the offense just kept on rolling from there. Smalley continued her impressive day from the plate by driving in a run with a single and pushing the Tigers’ lead up to double figures.

Smalley was a cool 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Troup offense.

Three more runs scored in the third inning with Cayleigh Godfrey hitting a double to bring home the first while a sac fly and an error brought home two more runs.

Bassett and Baker had two hits apiece while Philpot, Godfrey, Zoe Graham and Kennedy McCoy all had a hit each. It was a special moment for McCoy, who was beaming with excitement after having not been able to hit since February as she battled back from an injury.

McCoy also got the lion’s share of work in the circle after starter Kaylee Umfress exited the game with an injury in the second inning. Umfress had allowed just two hits before leaving the game. McCoy also only allowed two hits to go along with two strikeouts.

Troup softball improved to 9-12 overall and 7-5 in region play. The Tigers currently sit at fourth in region 2-3A with just four games (all region matchups) left on the schedule. Troup will travel to take on Spalding Tuesday in what will be a crucial region matchup with the two teams battling it out for fourth place in the region and a guaranteed spot in the 2024 state playoffs.
