The Callaway softball team had no troubles on the second day of a back-to-back on Tuesday, trumping Rutland 12-3 on the road for an important region win.

It was actually the Hurricanes who struck first. After a scoreless top of the first inning for the Cavaliers, Rutland scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take an early lead.

The Hurricane lead would be short-lived with the Cavaliers striking back with three runs in the top of the second to take their first lead of the game. Jackie Pitts got the Cavaliers on the board with a one-run double. Layla Elkins scored on a passed ball later in the inning to knot the game up at two runs apiece. Brianna Pattillo got an RBI groundout to give Callaway the lead.

That one-run lead would not last long with the Hurricanes tying the game up with a run in the bottom of the second.

With the game locked in at three runs each heading into the third inning, the Cavalier bats came to life and completely blew the game open with eight runs, taking a commanding 11-3 lead. Savannah Rice got the action started with a two-run double. Elkins hit a one-run single and Pitts followed a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3. Mikayla Blakenship hit a double to drive home another run while Madison Kemp got an RBI groundout to get in on the fun. Ella Kelly rounded out the scoring in the inning with a two-run double.

Pitts continued her big day with an RBI single in the fourth to make it 12-3 Callaway. Pitts was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Kelly, just a freshman, also had a big showing on offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Elkins had two hits while Rice, Blankenship, Kaitlyn Williams, Karlie Walker, Lakyn Gatens and Bella Cleveland all had one hit apiece.

Elkins got the start in the circle for the Cavaliers and pitched two innings before making way for Cleveland, who pitched the final three innings and did not allow a single hit.

Callaway is now 8-14 overall and 6-5 in region play. The Cavaliers will have a tough road game on Wednesday as they travel to take on 4A Harris County.
