The Troup County Marshal’s Office is seeking a grant from the Heart of West Georgia to pay for automated external defibrillators (AED) to go in their vehicles and potentially save lives.
On Tuesday, new Chief Marshal Keith Flory requested permission from the Troup County Board of Commissioners to apply for and accept a grant from the Heart of West Georgia that would pay for the AEDs.
Flory said marshals are sometimes the first responders on the scene in an emergency, and it could potentially make a difference if they were able to utilize the life-saving devices.
“I noticed that during a shooting in the county, one of my deputy marshals was the first one to the scene and performed CPR. They got me to thinking, I want them to have the resources they need to give medical treatment,” Flory said.
Flory said four AEDs would cover the entire county. There are currently two deputy marshals that cover the northern zone and two that cover the southern zone of Troup County.
The grant would potentially provide up to $10,000 to pay for the AEDS. The devices are $2,500 each. There is no match requirement to accept the grant.
Flory said they are seeking funds to pay for four AEDs, but he believes they can get funds to pay for at least two devices.
The request to apply for and accept the grant was unanimously approved by the Board of Commissioners.
In other business, the Board of Commissioners approved:
4 The purchase of a replacement camera system for the jail annex in the amount of $43,755.
4 The purchase of mobile data terminals for Troup County Fire Department vehicles at a cost of $102,079.24.
4 The final plat for the Dove Creek Subdivision Phase 3 for Trademark Quality Homes. The plat includes 11 lots on approximately 37 acres off of Mourning Court. The lots range from 2 to 6.622 acres.
