On Oct. 3, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ West Point Lake project hosted more than 1,400 participants for the 45th annual Special Day for Special People event, which offered outdoor fun and community engagement. Held at Rocky Point Park, the event was designed to provide individuals with special needs and the elderly with an opportunity to enjoy various activities, including pontoon boat rides, music, and wildlife interactions.
Organized by the project staff and supported by local community partners such as Coca-Cola and Publix, the event aimed to create a safe and inclusive environment. Volunteers and staff partnered to ensure participants and their chaperones had a memorable experience, free of charge. The event has grown significantly, with attendance doubling from last year.
“The Special Day for Special People event is a great example of how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can collaborate with community sponsors to create inclusive recreational opportunities for everyone, including individuals with special needs,” said Susan Cromer, West Point Lake Chief Ranger. “Providing a safe and memorable outdoor experience for our guests and incredibly rewarding to our staff and partners. This event strengthens our community ties and highlights our ongoing commitment to ensuring that our parks remain open, accessible, and enjoyable for all, regardless of age or ability.”
Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, such as a bouncy house, hayrides, and a petting zoo, all next to the scenic backdrop of West Point Lake. One of the highlights for many participants was the pontoon boat rides, during which they could take in the lake’s natural beauty.
Mike Linville, West Point Lake Park Ranger and designated special event coordinator, reflected on the significance of organizing the event.
“Organizing the Special Day for Special People event each year is the highlight of my year,” he said. “This incredible event allowed me to witness firsthand the joy and connection shared among participants, staff, and volunteers. It’s truly humbling to see how our team and sponsors unite to create a space of acceptance and celebration where everyone feels valued. I’m grateful to work with such a compassionate and dedicated team whose efforts leave a lasting impact on both participants and all of us who get to watch that magic happen.”
The event’s success demonstrates USACE’s commitment to creating inclusive recreational opportunities and fostering enduring relationships with the local community. By offering these opportunities, USACE ensures that West Point Lake remains a place for everyone, regardless of their ability, to enjoy outdoor activities and the natural beauty of public lands.
