LCS wins double OT thriller to claim region championship

The Lafayette Christian football team are region champions. The Cougars went on the road and earned a second half comeback win over Young Americans 43-42 in double overtime to win a region title. 

After a scoreless first overtime period, the Eagles scored a touchdown to start the second overtime period, but failed to convert the two-point conversion which would prove costly. Logan Chldree would answer with a 15-yard touchdown. Bradley Miller would nail the extra point to give the Cougars a dramatic road win.

The Eagles took an early 6-0 lead in a touchdown with 5:21 left to go in the first half. Lafayette Christian had a near instant response, scoring less than 30 seconds later when Caleb Hinton rumbled 40 yards into the end zone. An extra point gave the Cougars a 7-6 lead. 

The lead would be short lived as the Eagles scored on a 63-yard rushing touchdown less than a minute later. 

Young Americans would extend its lead to 20-7 early in the second quarter and carry that two-score advantage into halftime.

The Cougars came out of the break fired up and cut the Eagles’ lead down to one score (20-14) with 8:44 left in the third quarter. David Karvelas hit Jonathan Ross for a 4-yard touchdown after a long drive for Lafayette Christian. 

The Cougars were not done there as Karvelas hit Connor Hudson for a 70-yard touchdown to give the team its first lead of the game, 21-20, with 6:25 left in the third quarter. Lafayette Christian would convert an onside kick and eventually find the end zone on the ensuing possession when Karvelas rushed into the end zone from five yards out. 

The Cougars would get a safety to go up 29-20 with 5:18 left in the third quarter.

Lafayette Christian would deliver what the team thought would be the dagger with 9:47 left in the game when Karvelas connected with Logan Childree on a 15-yard touchdown to go up 36-20.

Eli Carroll recovered a fumble on the ensuing Eagles drive, but the Young Americans kept fighting.

The Eagles would score to cut the Cougar lead to one possession with 3:37 left in the game. Young Americans scored again with 42.8 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. 

Lafayette Christian will have a bye next week before hosting in the second round of the GAPPS state playoffs on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
