On Wednesday, a portion of the Wellstar Enoch Callaway Cancer Center was fashioned into a painting gallery of sorts as a way for cancer survivors, volunteers, friends, family and staff to come together for a night of camaraderie.

Barbara Ward, a cancer survivor, wanted to give other cancer survivors a way to get together for friendship and support.

“After COVID, it was harder for people to get out and some were just afraid to come out and get together,” Ward said, “so we wanted to do something to help cancer patients and survivors get out of the house and give them some socialization, some support.”

Ward believes that if people can find just one thing every day to look forward to or enjoy, then their days go by happier.

“We get together to talk, to party, to share and to heal,” Ward said.

Ward came up with the idea of painting porch Christmas boards with the hopes of jump-starting the holiday season.

All of the necessary items to create the boards were provided.

Handmade bows were created by Stephanie Hand, a staff member at the Wellstar Enoch Callaway Cancer Center.

There was music playing in the background to keep things festive and lively.

A hot chocolate bar and cookies were available for everyone to enjoy.

Ward hopes to continue having get-togethers such as this one on a monthly basis.

“Getting together builds relationships with each other and some of the staff,” Ward said.

Ward added, “My quote is my motto, I am Barbara Ward, a cancer survivor.  Get up. Dress up. Show up. And NEVER give up!”
