During the Troup County Board of Commissioners work session on Tuesday, Lindsay Mobley provided the commissioners an update on the recent pop-up legal clinic hosted by the Troup County Law Library in partnership with Court Services, the Georgia Legal Services Program, and the UGA School of Law.
The pop-up clinic was held in late October at the Goodwill Career Center in LaGrange, and the second clinic was sponsored by the Law Library to provide free legal help and guidance in all areas of the law.
This year’s clinic helped 43 residents address legal issues ranging from record restrictions, real estate, social security disability, family law, tax law, probate and estate law, garnishments and more.
The clinic had 15 volunteer attorneys, a law student and two Spanish interpreters to aid those in need of legal assistance.
“We had a very successful day and doubled our outreach from last year’s inaugural event,” said Court Services Director Lindsay Mobley. “We look forward to continuing this project in the future and hope to keep seeing an increase in participation!”
Attendees were also provided with information on all the other legal clinics offered through the UGA School of Law, as well as information about the Accountability Courts in Troup County.
The event was advertised in both English and Hispanic or Spanish language flyers to the community.
Mobley said she got the idea to host the clinic at the Goodwill Center because that’s where the UGA Clinic in Athens had hosted theirs.
“Our Goodwill Center here just has so many resources. And Bob Goehring is absolutely an advocate for health and citizens as much as possible. He has been a wonderful partner in this. When people are there looking for other resources, it just works out,” Mobley said.
“We had a lot of people that didn’t even know about the clinic that just happened to be at the Goodwill center, and they’re like, oh, so they walk over. So it’s an excellent place for it.”
Mobley said she is already planning next year’s event and is hopefully going to do one in the spring as well as the fall if she can convince the attorneys to come back for more volunteer time.
“I’m hoping that we can do it twice next year,” she said.
