The City of LaGrange honored LaGrange Landscape Superintendent Fernando Vazquez for his 25 years of dedicated service at the recent City Council meeting.
Vazquez is the Landscape Superintendent for the City, specializing in plant maintenance, planting, irrigation, and landscaping. Born and raised in San Pedro, Queretaro, Mexico, Vazquez moved to the United States at the age of 17 with a passion for working with nature and creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces.
Vazquez’s career in public landscaping began as a Public Service Assistant (PSA) before he moved up to an Advanced PSA role. His hard work, dedication, and growing expertise led him to become the Lead Landscaper and eventually Landscape Superintendent. Over the years, he has become an integral part of the City’s landscaping team, taking responsibility for the design and installation of landscaping in many major projects. Some of the most notable projects he has contributed to include the Calumet Ballfield, Sweetland Amphitheatre’s landscaping, the DEFAs Building, several new fire stations, the Bull Street Tree Planting project, the Visit LaGrange building renovation, City Hall, the Welcome Sign, Lafayette Square, Nutwood Streetscape, and many others.
His passion for landscaping goes beyond his professional work. He is deeply committed to maintaining and beautifying public spaces, often finding himself working on landscaping projects even during his time off. He takes great pride in his work and is always eager to improve the appearance and sustainability of the City’s green spaces.
In addition to his work, Vazquez cherishes his roots in San Pedro, Queretaro, and makes it a point to visit his hometown Christmas season to spend quality time with his family and friends. These trips are a reminder of his heritage and the values that shaped his work ethic and dedication.
Vazquez is excited about the future of landscaping in LaGrange and looks forward to continuing his work with the City for the rest of his career, teaching the next generation of employees the landscaping techniques and knowledge he gained over the years. His dedication to both his craft and his community make him a respected leader in his field and a valued asset to the City of LaGrange.
Vazquez and his wife Amy met in 1995, and together they have three daughters, who have been a central part of his life and a constant source of pride.
