The Troup High football season came to a close nearly a month ago as the Tigers just narrowly missed out on a trip to the 3A state playoffs. The youthful Tigers team did not quite make it to the postseason, but the team had a solid season and now the postseason awards are flooding in.
Troup had six players named to the Region 2-3A All-Region teams with a further 10 players being named to the honorable mention list.
Leading the way for the Tigers on the teams was McCarty Harrelson. The junior was named the special teams player of the year for the region. Harrelson connected on 76% of his field goals with a long of 53 yards while also connecting on 25 of his 26 extra-point attempts. No kick was as big as the one he hit in OT against Trinity Christian that gave the Tigers a clutch home win at the buzzer. Harrelson is more than just a kicker as he averaged 39 yards a punt this season as well.
The Tigers had three players named to the All-Region first team — two on offense and one on defense. Big Jatorian Blackmon, a Troy commit, was a lock for a spot on the first team as an offensive lineman. The mountain of a man is set to make his next destination official next Wednesday at his signing day after paving the way for numerous Troup skilled position players the last several seasons.
Joining Blackmon on the first team offense was running back Javarris Warner. The breakout sophomore led the Tigers with 816 yards on the ground and nine rushing touchdowns. Warner averaged over six yards per carry in large part due the work from Blackmon and the other lineman up front, but Warner is an extremely talented back with an extremely bright future with the Tigers.
On the first team defense, Troup was represented by Skylen Straughn. The junior led the Tigers in tackles (82), tackles for a loss (15) and sacks (5). After a tremendous junior season, the Troup coaching staff will be expecting even bigger things from their star defensive player heading into his senior season.
Troup had two players named to the second team with junior offensive linemen Gavin Laney and Wade England earning a spot. With Blackmon set to graduate in May, these two will be the foundation of the offensive line (and in many ways the entire offense) heading into next season.
The Tigers had a whopping 10 players named to the honorable mention list including another one of their talented offensive lineman in sophomore Jaylen Cannon.
Without a doubt, Troup had a very talented sophomore class, further illustrated by three more sophomores making the honorable mention list alongside Cannon. Despite missing a game, KJ McQueen, a defensive back/linebacker, had a breakout sophomore season, finishing second on the team with 74 tackles. Jeremiah Culpepper made the honorable mention list as a linebacker and finished third on the team in tackles with 48.
The final sophomore on the honorable mention list was Davis Moncus, who led the Tigers in receptions and receiving yards with 27 catches for 329 yards.
Troup had two juniors make the honorable mention list —- Garrison Edwards and Yorkbricus Taylor. The former missed a handful of games, but still finished with 318 passing yards and 634 rushing yards to go along with nine total touchdowns. Taylor finished with 41 tackles in eight appearances this season.
Four senior defensive players for Troup were also named to the honorable mention list — Amarius Perdue, Asher Harrelson, Tyreon Smith and Chase Hilton. Perdue lived in opponents’ backfields this season and finished with three sacks. Harrelson and Hilton ate up blockers inside and allowed Perdue and Straughn to dominate on the outside. Smith, a defensive back, finished the season with two interceptions.
