LaGrange College sophomore Devin Dowell is off to a blazing start with the Panthers. The LaGrange High School graduate transferred to LaGrange College after a season at Voorhees and is already reeling in the accolades. Dowell was named the Collegiate Conference of the South Player of the Week for week 7.
The official player of the week press release stated “Sophomore guard Devin Dowell led LaGrange to a 2-1 week, showcasing his scoring ability and all-around contributions. Over three games, Dowell totaled 47 points, five rebounds, six assists, six steals, and two blocks, averaging 15.67 points per game. In the Panthers’ lone loss, he posted a career-high 22 points.”
Through 10 games, Dowell is averaging 11.2 points on 43.6% shooting from the field. The sophomore has scored in double figures in three straight games after accomplishing that feat twice in the opening seven games of the season.
Dowell has been improving as the season has gone along and had his best game in the red and black on Sunday against East Texas Baptist. In the team’s 79-63 loss, Dowell scored a career-high 22 points with a season-high four steals. Dowell did it from all over the court, making his most baskets in a game since joining the Panthers (7) and most free throws (5). He also tied his season high in 3-pointers with three.
Dowell was named newcomer of the year during his freshman season at Voorhees. Before heading to South Carolina for his first year of college ball, Dowell was a standout with the Grangers. He was named to the Region 4-4A All-Region first team during his senior year of high school where he was a real captain under head coach Mark Veal.
Dowell and the Panthers will return to the court on Tuesday in an exhibition at Troy University before playing in the Emory Showcase on Dec. 29-30.
