The Callaway girls basketball team has responded in a big way after losing their season opener last week, winning two games in a row, including a gritty 46-39 win over Newnan on Tuesday night.
It was a defensive battle and the Cavaliers had to dig deep to pull out the win.
Callaway’s offense got off to a sluggish start, scoring just six points in the first quarter which led to a 10-6 deficit after the opening eight minutes of the game.
It looked like the game would be tied at 16 heading to halftime, but ShaKenya Wortham hit a 3-pointer just before the first-half buzzer sounded to send the Cavaliers into the break with a narrow 3-point lead.
The second half continued the dogfight of the first half. It was Newnan who controlled the third quarter and subsequently tied the game up heading to the fourth quarter.
The final eight minutes were all Callaway. The Cavaliers outscored the Cougars 14-7 in the final frame, using some suffocating defense to send Newnan home with a loss.
Aubrey Chelcy led the Callaway offense with poise and confidence. She finished with 15 points to go along with three rebounds and a steal.
Raniya Mahone was all over the court for the Cavaliers, narrowly missing out on a double-double with nine points and 15 rebounds. She also finished with four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Wortham finished third on the team with eight points as scoring was spread out among the eight Cavalier scorers.
The only negative for Callaway on the night was the fact that the team missed 14 free throws combined.
Callaway improved to 2-1 on the season. The Cavaliers will play in the Heard County Christmas Showcase starting on Thursday at 3 p.m. with a game against Northgate.
