The Troup girls basketball team is on fire. The Tigers dismantled Upson-Lee 57-33 on Thursday for the team’s seventh straight victory.

The always impressive Carla Thornton defense was on full display on Thursday evening as it has been all season. The Tigers let up the second-lowest point total on the season against Upson-Lee and the fourth time this season the team has made sure the opposing team has not cracked 40 points. Troup has let up more than 54 points just once this season — a 64-32 loss to Harris County back in November.

The Troup defense allowed just 10 points in the first before clamping down on the Knights in the second, allowing just three points in the period which allowed the Tigers to take a 28-13 lead into halftime and they never looked back from there.

Jaz Williams set the tone early for Troup with eight of her 10 points in the first quarter.

The second half was more of the same as the Tigers outscored Upson-Lee 15-6 in the third quarter to all but put the game to rest. A large fourth-quarter lead allowed Thornton to empty the bench and use some of her less experienced players

Sheniyah Philpot has been on a tear to start her junior season and it looks like nothing will slow her down at the moment. Philpot finished as the game’s leading scorer with 27 points and was in constant attack mode all night. The junior attempted 11 free throws on the evening and connected on 10 of them. It was not a one-quarter show, but a steady diet of Philpot that the Knights got on Thursday as she scored at least four points in every quarter.

Ty Buckner helped put any lingering doubts about the game to bed in the fourth with six of her eight points in the period. Buckner dominated the post in the quarter and sucked in all rebounds as if she had a gravitational pull.

Troup improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in region play. The red-hot Tigers will return to action after a short Christmas break, taking on Callaway away from home on Dec. 28.
