The 2024 GHSA high school football season is long in the rearview mirror, but the offseason is only just heating up. As is the norm now, Callaway High football is seeing the Division I offers flow into a variety of players—seniors and younger players alike.
The Cavaliers currently have six players with Division I offers and will likely see even more offers come in over the coming weeks and months.
The Cavaliers have two seniors who could be poised to play Division I ball as soon as this fall. Defensive back Kavius Leonard and defensive lineman/tight end BreShun Hall each hold multiple Division I offers. The former has offers from the Army and Naval Academies while the latter has offers from UAB, East Tennessee and West Georgia among others.
Leonard, a captain and leader on the Callaway defense this past season, is a high-character kid — a usual trait for kids coached by Pete Wiggins. Leonard finished his senior season with 55 total tackles, nine PBUs and an interception. His best game of the season came against Morgan County in which he shut down top wide receiver prospect Jaylen Elder, who finished with 34 total yards in the game as the Cavaliers claimed the region championship.
Hall is an interesting case because he did not start life at Callaway High. The senior transferred in from Greenville before his junior season in which he had to sit out due to eligibility rules. Hall finally made his Cavalier debut in 2024 and made an impact on both sides of the ball.
“It feels great because with my sitting out last year, I didn’t expect it,” Hall said during the regular season. “I don’t know what position they want me at, but I know I will be ready for wherever the coaches ask me to play. Recruiting here is a lot different than my old school.”
Hall finished the season with 150 receiving yards, 209 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns despite missing four games with an injury. The senior also made impact plays on defense for the Cavaliers.
With National Signing Day set for Feb. 5, Leonard and Hall will be making their next destinations known sooner rather than later.
Callaway has a loaded junior class with three players — Xae Anderson, Tyrone Fitten and Elijah Rowe — all receiving multiple Division I offers.
Anderson had a stellar junior season in which he was named to the ACJ 2A All-State team as well as the Region 2-2A Defensive Player of the Year. He led the Cavaliers with 130 total tackles while also registering four sacks and two interceptions. The two-way stud lines up at linebacker on defense and tightend/h-back on offense.
Anderson already holds offers from Vanderbilt, and Appalachian State and just received an offer from Georgia State to start the new year.
Fitten’s recruiting heated up at the end of the 2024 season. He received his first Division I offer from Appalachian State in Nov. and announced on Thursday that he received an offer from Georgia State. Fitten turned heads at the FCA All-Star game in late Dec. in which he was named the game’s defensive MVP.
Fitten led the Cavaliers with five sacks as a junior, registering 57 tackles as well.
Like Anderson and Fitten, Rowe has been receiving increased attention to start the new year. Rowe, an offensive lineman who held offers from the likes of Georgia State and Appalachian State coming into 2025, received an offer from Colorado State earlier this week.
The Division I offers are not just reserved for upperclassmen at Callaway as sophomore Kaiden James has been turning heads since he was in middle school. James holds offers from Alabama, Georgia Southern, etc. and will continue to command attention from the next level as he grows over the next two seasons. James finished the 2024 season as Callaway’s leading receiver with 22 catches for 410 yards and three touchdowns.
Callaway has a strong reputation for getting guys to premium Division I universities and colleges and the football program is starting to build a reputation for putting players in the NFL. The 2024-25 NFL regular season ended with former Cavaliers Braylon Sanders on the New England practice squad and Tank Bigsby finished as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ leading rusher.
The Cavaliers currently have Sam Williams (Missouri) and Tate Johnson (Auburn) at the Division I level.
Former Callaway greats include Terry Godwin (UGA), Keiondre Jones (Auburn and FSU), Quantavious Leslie (LSU) and Ricky Parks (Southern Miss) among others.
The amount of players that Callaway has sent to the Division I level continues to grow in recent years. The Cavaliers brought Andrew Caraway, a former Callaway football player himself, on board as the recruiting coordinator in 2020 who has helped bring attention to the program. Caraway films the games from the sidelines and has built a recruiting portal for Callaway and that barely scratches the surface of what he brings to the program.
