The Callaway boys basketball team earned a clutch 63-59 region win over Jackson on Tuesday in front of their home faithful.
The Cavaliers offense got off to a slow start and subsequently the team had to play catch up in the first half. Callaway trailed 16-10 after the first quarter. It only got marginally better in the second quarter as Callaway still trailed at the break, 30-25.
The Cavaliers would flip the script in the second half. Callaway outscored Jackson 22-17 in the third quarter to send the game to the fourth all tied up.
The fourth quarter was back-and-forth with the game coming down to the final few plays.
With the game tied at 55 and under three minutes on the clock, JaQuinton Williams hit a layup as he was fouled to put the Cavaliers up by two points. Jackson would never tie the game or take the lead again, though the Red Devils would come close.
After Tyren Buggs hit a layup with 57 seconds on the clock to put the Cavaliers up by four points, Jackson answered with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to just one point.
Buggs would hit one of two free throws to put Callaway up by two points and that would prove decisive as they were able to force a turnover by Jackson on the ensuing possession which led to two made free throws from AJ Williams to ice the game.
Buggs had a strong game for the Cavaliers, scoring 10 of his 14 points in the second half. Tyson Shell led Callaway in scoring with 17 points. The scoring was largely spread around for the Cavaliers with six players scoring at least six points in the game.
Callaway moved to 2-11 overall and 2-1 in region play. It has been a struggle at times this season for the Cavaliers, who are looking to repeat as region champions. Callaway has a busy week as the team will travel to take on region opponents Rutland on the road Thursday before hosting Morgan County on Friday.
